We all believe it won’t happen to us. We always try to be so careful to scrutinize every questionable email. The reality is… it happens so easily with the click of a button, and it happened to me last December! What appeared to be an innocent ad response and attached resume to an email opened up a ransomware attack that took over my desktop. “Pay now to unencrypt your documents” a pop-up warned. Was the message just a pop-up though? My mouse was functioning and I had access to files as normal. So I went about my business as usual but knew better than to assume my system had not been unaffected. I contacted our virtual desktop and cloud provider immediately and they were able to confirm that only 3 minutes of time had been affected on the system and NO information had been taken or encrypted. For someone else this could have been very bad news, but because we have the right tools, our data and shared drives were completely restored in a matter of minutes with no damage
Think about it, had I been using in-house servers with individual software on multiple machines, the down time and cost to do damage control would have been a lengthy process and an unexpected expense.
