Telecom in the News!

Each month NWMAP Telecom likes to feature Telecom events that made it in the news or pertinent info to your need-to-know Telecom info. We haven’t updated this in a couple of months now so we’d like to start anew this month by sharing WHERE we get our news from.

Many sites have frequently updated Tech and Telecom info in abundance, but not all of it is pertinent to everyone. We focus on widespread news that benefits or affects many people. Lately we’ve been focusing on business, sales approach, and other aspects within the Telecom industry itself.

Some great daily info for CIO’s and even CEO’s is at the Harvard Business Review site under the “Blogs” section: http://blogs.hbr.org/ There is a lot of info here from leadership, sales approaches, innovation, and all the other buzz words of the day. Some of it is based largely on opinions, making it subjective in nature, However, there are some gems here so keep on the lookout. Our favorite this month was: http://blogs.hbr.org/cs/2013/07/want_to_raise_prices_tell_a_be.html

We also like our Telecom carriers’ blogs. NWMAP has over 40 carriers we represent. These are specific to the needs of our agents at NWMAP and people in the industry. We like Intelysis Blog and Telecom Channel Blog:http://www.intelisys.com/press . Another good one is 8×8: http://www.8×8.com/AboutUs/8x8Blog.aspx

For the daily grind: http://www.networkworld.com/topics/unified-communications.html and http://www.infoworld.com/news. Oh, and one more:http://www.fiercetelecom.com/news . You’re going to find company specific news here and news on the big ones like Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft, and Google, etc.

Telecom in The News: July 2012

The talk on Telecom still seems to be focused on BYOD- and the verdict is mixed. The conclusion for us on this topic is basically a buyer beware scenario. Know what you’re getting into. This really can have it’s advantages but if a company is not prepared for incorporating this type of work style, it can be a disaster.

Same can be said about the cloud- great technology, some major pluses for small companies as well, but get educated on it. Best way to know if it fits your business needs specifically is inquiring with your NW MAP Agents: https://nwmap.com/contact-us

Windstream talks about their new service. They believe their Professional Bundle will give SMBs the same IP-based  service capabilities as large businesses. “Many small businesses do not have the specialized staff to support their IT  needs, nor the design team to build and maintain their own websites,” said Don  Perkins, vice president of business marketing, Windstream, in a release  announcing the new service. “With Windstream’s Professional Bundle, we help  customers significantly reduce expense and complexity associated with computer  repair and website maintenance.”

What’s going on in Telecom?

snippets of Telecom info that makes recent news. If there are noteworthy topics catching the telecom community’s eye, then we’ll report on it, giving you the bullet points and links as well.

New products and services are coming out consistently in 2012. NW MAP has over 40 carriers and many are offering new additions to their portfolio…including:

EarthLink’s Cloud Workspace and more recently TechCare, an IT Help Desk solution. As with numerous services appearing on the forefront of Telecom, this service can be highly customized to meet the needs specific to the business. It also enables IT staff to be free up time for more crucial tasks.

Also…Integra Telecom has expanded its on-net fiber presence; the growth of the fiber footprint will support new services, including Ethernet, cloud services, and recently announced wavelength service
suite.

Telecom in the News: April 2012

NWMAP likes to review the top Telecom news stories for each month. This is what was happening in March and April.

March wrapped up the Channel Partners Conference and Expo in Las Vegas. For a complete review: https://nwmap.com/2012-channel-partners-vegas-telecom-conference-and-expo-review

Other news:

Communications network provider MegaPath Corp.’s aggressive Ethernet over Copper buildout has put the carrier among the nation’s largest providers of EoC service.

In the past year, MegaPath has aggressively expanded its EoC footprint. In September, it announced it would provide service nationwide.

Windstream is offering new disastor recovery service. The drive here is about unburdening a business from having to build their own disaster recovery capabilities themselves. By handing these processes to Windstream, they can replicate and recover critical servers and data center infrastructure in the cloud at a lower cost.

Integra Telecom is adding another page to its growing medium-to-large business service cookbook by launching a new set of optical wavelength services. Targeted at large enterprises, health care, and financial service companies, the new service provides metro-area and long-haul private networking for a set of customers that want high-bandwidth, dedicated network transport between their locations. Delivered over Integra’s DWDM-based fiber network, the focus is on providing customers flexibility and choice. They get the service with either a TDM or Ethernet interface in increments of 1 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, or 10 Gbps.

In April, EarthLink Business will unveil IT services for smaller, single locations. The provider has offered an enterprise version but wanted to target other organization sizes as well.

Cloud computing and services is all the buzz. Cloud computing service delivery has a strong business case that includes cost reduction, service acceleration, and improved service delivery quality and reliability. Before developing the business case, however, it is necessary to define cloud services because the term cloud has been overused.
