These days you can never be too careful with your online security.  Did you know that the first Thursday in May of each year is officially declared “World Password Day?”  That’s right!!  There is a day for everything including promoting good security hygiene and password habits!  Tech Republic has some great tips to help keep it simple:

Create Strong Passwords:

Strong passwords will have at least eight characters, with a mix of upper and lowercase letters.  You should also include numbers and symbols.  Avoid using personal information like birthdays and middle names.

Use Different passwords for every account:

Using a different password for all of your various online accounts is important because cross sharing them can compromise all of your accounts should you get hacked.  This is vital especially for your online banking and financial accounts.

Use a password manager

Too hard keeping track of multiple passwords?  Password managers such as LastPass or 1Password can help you store multiple passwords in an encrypted manner, for easy access.

Turn on multi-factor authentication

Multi-factor authentication can add additional security on top of your standard password.  For example, if you are using an app that requires a security question, a code or a fingerprint scan this can help create an extra layer of security on your account.

Following these simple steps along with making a habit of changing your passwords a few times a year, will help protect you from the headache of undoing the chaos left in the wake of  hackers.

Happy World Password Day!
